King charged to victory in China this weekend. Just a year after having a baby, Tarryn King returned to elite level for Sup Surfing and Racing. The medal is the first SUP gold medal that has been won by a South African.
The Women’s SUP Sprint Final finished off the day of racing. Competing against France’s 2017 Silver Medalist Amandine Chazot, Italy’s Caterina Stenta, USA’s Jade Howson, Australia’s Terrene Black, and Japan’s Yuka Sato, King built a decisive lead and crossed the finish line in first place.
King says of her noteworthy achievement:
“I’ve put in a lot of time and a lot of training. I am so stoked. To win Gold in the Sprints is a dream come true.
“It’s been quite a journey from giving birth to being World Champion. I stayed fit during my pregnancy and once I gave birth, I bounced back quite quickly. I really focused on coming to compete in the ISA and it all paid off.”
Who is Tarryn King?
As a schoolgirl, King excelled in all sporting disciplines, from dancing to swimming, surfing and athletics and walked away with the Victrix Ludorum on a number of occasions.
Aside from being the SA Stand Up paddling Champion for a number of years, she is the only women to hold both the SA SUP and SA Longboard surfing titles in the same year and did this on two occasions. She started paddling in 2012 when she happened upon the SA Champs which were being held at Tableview to watch and support her then-boyfriend Thomas King.
It has been a non-stop ride ever since, going from WP Champ to SA Champ and now becoming the World Champion of sprint racing in the ISA World Stand Up Paddleboarding Championships, held in Winning China.
Her stepfather and coach, Gary van Rooyen says, “She took a break from competition for only six months in 2017 to have her son, Koa, and has come back even stronger than before. She’s a real force on the international stage, which she proved last week.”
