Three hikers have been stabbed and a 58-year-old was hospitalised following a vicious attack at the Table Mountain National Park.
A police spokesperson confirmed four men have been arrested for stabbing three hikers on Thursday morning, while they made their way around Table Mountain National Park.
As News24 report, Captain FC van Wyk said the gang, aged 20 to 27, were found with the hikers’ clothes and takkies in their possession.
They were also found to be carrying a flick-knife with them as well as tools for breaking into cars. The victims are aged between 31 and 58, with the eldest being hospitalised due to their injuries.

“The victims identified their belongings and pointed out the suspects to the police and belongings of the victims were handed back to them. The suspects would remain in custody until their first court appearance.”
A fifth suspected made a getaway on-foot during the operation to apprehend the criminals and was last seen heading into a residential area near the Newlands Ravine – where the attack took place.
André van Schalkwyk is a spokesperson for Table Mountain Watch (TMW). He stated that this particular location has become a hot-spot for muggings, and claims this is the fifth case reported since September. He’s shared a few safety tips for hikers who are still planning to visit the area:
“We want people to be very cautious in that area. We are asking people not to retaliate. In most cases where people have been hurt, they retaliated in some form or another.”
“If you are hiking or running on your own, you need to consider how far away from help you want to be, assuming you can still phone and are not severely injured, and where waiting an hour is actually critical.”

Unfortunately, walking enthusiasts are becoming prime targets for lowlife criminals. Back in January, a group of nine Cape Town hikers were attacked by two knife-wielding thugs, on their way from Silvermine to Kalk Bay.
The assailants had pretended they too were a group of hikers, latching onto a group and walking with them for half-an-hour, before they began their frenzy. Although no-one died, one victim, Imelda van den Berg, described the scene as a bloodbath on her Facebook page.
